Yogesh and his family

Today “Teacher Ini”, 2 Volunteers’ (Beate & Henriette from Norway) and I went after work to the family of Yogesh to Sigatoka. This is the family for whom we intend to build a new house.
First of all some background information about Yogesh:
Yogesh is 11 years old and comes from Sigatoka. He had always the desire to go to school. Because of that he decided a year ago to move to his older sister to the city of Lautoka in order to work there on the street to earn his own money that he can go to school. But when he came back to his family, his father has spent all the money on alcohol and therefore he couldn’t go to school. After that he ran away from home. About 1 month ago, he told “Teacher Ini” that it would be his greatest wish to go to a school and he also told her the story with his father. After that, “Teacher Ini” promised him that she will ensure that he can go within the next 3 weeks to school. After “Teacher Ini” told us about him, all Volunteers’ have donated money and now he is going to school.
Currently Yogesh lives with Teacher Ini since the school belongs to the kindergarten where we work and so they can come together every day to school.

About the family:
Sigatoka is 1.5 hours away from Nadi town. When we arrived we had to walk up a little hill to get to their house (which was not so easy, because it had been raining and everything was muddy, we had to be careful that we didn’t slide down once at the time)
The mother was unfortunately not at home because all 2 weeks she’s going to Suva (the capital of Fiji) to work on the street to gain some money with baking goods.
Their 'house' was also like the old grandmother house; they also live in a small tin hut without running water or sanitary facilities, we could see immediately that it’s leaking from the roof. The toilet consists of a whole in the ground outside the house.
The neighbours’ have told us, that the mother of Yogesh should be back from Suva by 6 o’clock in the evening. So we decided to drive to Sigatoka town to meet her and her second son at the bus station. However, because of the fact that it was only 3 o’clock we decided to buy some food for the family.
At 6pm we met the mother at the bus station and we told her a little about the procedure and everything we want to do. Than she told us about her husband and that he’s been beating them, etc. She also said, that she was worried she couldn’t feed her children and that she misses Yogesh so much. After that she started crying terribly and she said she would prefer to give up her life.
It was really very emotional, and each of us where tears running down our faces. Then I knew that I wouldn’t go home before we’ve build her a new home and we’ve given her “a new will to live”. “We have sworn to her that everything will change
Next week we will meet again to clarify whether it will be possible to get a property offered. After that we can hopefully start to build the house!
